Summer Institute: Teaching with Primary Sources
Portland State University | June 20th-24th 2016

This workshop, which reflects the partnership between the LOC/TPS and NGS State Alliances, offers a unique opportunity to apply an inquiry-learning model to the use of primary sources available on the Library of Congress website through the lens of geographic thinking. The LOC has digitized over 37 million primary sources to bring learners the raw materials of U.S. society and culture spanning more than 200 years. Crossing multiple disciplinary areas, these sources inspire curiosity, prompt interesting questions, and support investigations of these questions—thereby creating conditions that promote deeper thinking and understanding. Adding the geographic perspective to the analysis of these primary sources gives new meaning and depth to what can be learned from these valuable resources.

Goal 1: Define what primary sources are and describe examples of the benefits of teaching with them
Goal 2: Analyze a primary source in different formats
2a: Analyze primary sources through historic and geographic lens and perspectives
2b: Use Library of Congress and other tools for geographic and spatial analysis
Goal 3: Access teaching resources, primary sources from http://loc.gov and the Library of Congress Teachers Page (http://loc.gov/teachers)
Goal 4: Facilitate a primary source analysis using Library of Congress tools
Goal 5: Demonstrate how primary sources can support at least one teaching strategy (for example, geographic thinking, historical thinking, literacy, inquiry-based learning, etc.)
Goal 6: Create a primary source-based activity that helps students engage in learning, develop critical thinking skills and construct knowledge

Annotated Resource Set (ARS) - An ARS combines a set of primary sources with a lesson plan. The ARS contains thumbnail images and links to thematically chosen primary sources along with suggested instructional design components such as essential questions, standards, objectives, learning activities, assessment strategies and links to other related resources. The participants will be required to complete an ARS which takes into account the instructional steps of the learning activity, the student outcomes of the activity, and demonstrates an understanding of geographic perspective.
Primary Source-Based Learning Activity - Design a geographic activity utilizing primary sources from the Library of Congress using one or more of the inquiry based strategies/techniques learned in this workshop (e.g. RQI, Multiple Perspectives, etc.)
Geographic Analysis Tools - Geographic analysis tools from the Library of Congress and other sources will be introduced during the workshop. Participants will be asked to incorporate these tools into their classrooms and describe their use in workshop follow-up surveys.
